Silchar, December 23: The Silchar police arrested a local girl Priya Mazumdar on charges of assaulting a pregnant tribal vendor on suspicion of selling dog meat.
On November 24, two vendors belonging from indigenous Hmar community — Gracy Hmar and Lalmounpui Hmar — were reportedly assaulted by three local youths including two girls after they suspected that the duo had murdered a mongrel and were selling its meat at a roadside market in Jail road, Silchar.
These were caught in a video that went viral in the social media. The Hmar and the Manipuri community people in the Barak Valley’s town at Cachar district had protested for the arrest of the accused three — Sagnick Gupta, Mazumdar and Durba Paul — who went into hiding since the incident.
The pregnant woman, Gracy Hmar had suffered a miscarriage bacause of the assault on her.
The accused trios’ parents have filed for a bail plea but has been rejected, as per reports.
On Wednesday, several groups staged a protest in front of Cachar deputy commissioner’s office in Silchar demanding arrest of those involved in assualt of the two tribal women.
