At times when we are all fed up with the auto drivers for their dishonesty in the form of overcharging, finding an honest driver, who returns a purse containing Rs 2.5 lakhs that was left in his auto, is worth praising.

This is the testimony of Simadari Reddy which he shared at a Church service during the recent Thanksgiving program.

The Testimony

It was late night at around 9:30 P.M. My friend had asked me to drop him at the railway station to catch the 10:45 train for Guwahati. On the way, two middle-aged couples with luggage asked for a lift to the railway station. As it was drizzling they paid the auto fare and got down in a hurry. I wished my friend a safe journey and I moved home.

As I got down at the petrol pump to fill the auto tank, I saw one purse in the back seat of my auto. Out of curiosity, I opened the purse and to my sheer excitements, I saw bundles of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 neatly tucked inside the purse.

I quickly start my auto to go home, planning what to do next with the money. While on the road, I was constantly struggling with myself, whether to return the money or to keep it to myself. The inner voice wants me to return the money but then the other voice keeps telling me of the financial burdens I’m going through, the unpaid loans etc.

Not knowing what to do, I closed my eyes and prayed for Gods direction. As I said that little prayer, God’s voice was clear, that I have to return the purse. I immediately took a U-turn and moved straight towards the railway station.

At the railway platform, I kept on searching for the couple but couldn’t find them. I could see the train stationed there and the announcements being made for the departure. I could see people hurrying to get inside the trai but nowhere I could find the couple on the platform.

With not much time left, I approached the platform station for announcing about the lost purse. In a while, I saw two old couples wiping their tears and coming towards the office. I could see the happiness in their eyes, I saw the joy of tears as they were thanking God.

I learned that they were leaving for Guwahati for health treatment. They got hold of my contact number and said will meet me soon.

I returned back home with a sense of joy and accomplishment, but I also felt awkward as the couple left without giving me any rewards. Maybe, a little amount of money to appreciate my honesty would have been a great thing, I thought to myself.

I reached home, thanked God and continued my normal life. After three days, an unknown number called me to meet him. To my surprise, it was the son of that couple whom I had returned the purse. He invited me over to his house and provided me with a great lunch and gave me one local chicken and an envelope as a token of appreciation.

During the meeting, we had great discussions about life. I also told him that besides my auto-rickshaw business, I’m also a church secretary.

He asked me if I knew how much money was there in the purse, do which I replied, I don’t. He informed me that there were Rs 2.5 lakhs in that purse and that his parents were going to Guwahati for major treatment.

I thanked him for the lunch and the gift and went home happily. As I opened the envelope I found Rs 10,000 neatly packed inside.

That day I experienced the fulfillment of the word of God in my life, I felt I passed the examination, the major test of honesty and obedience.
