During an interview with Karan Thapar of The Wire, a Manipur MLA from the BJP party expressed his views on the current situation in the state. Paolienlal Haokip, who represents Saikot in the Churachandpur district, referred to the events as “targeted ethnic cleansing.” He also stated that he had lost faith in Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, whom he described as being “anti-Kuki” and “prejudiced,” with several Meiteis allegedly confirming this. Haokip mentioned having faith in the BJP, but he criticized the handling of the situation, referring to it as an “example of inept handling of everything.” According to him, state forces were openly supporting the rioters.
Haokip was asked whether he thought president’s rule was necessary in Manipur, to which he responded that he would prefer a change in leadership or president’s rule. However, he stated that it was up to the Centre to decide. He also expressed his doubts that the Kukis would accept any talks while Biren was in power.
